International Baccalaureate (IB)

International Baccalaureate (IB)

We are proud to have been an IB World School since 2011 now. This means that we can offer our students the opportunity to graduate with the International Baccalaureate®   (IB)  Diploma, an English-language leaving certificate, in addition to the Saxon Abitur.

International syllabi are an extension to our education not only in terms of language; unusual tasks are assigned to better prepare students for college and university. Great store is set on dedication to community service. In addition to social skills, discipline and commitment are necessary to deal with the pressures of graduating from two different  educational  systems  at  the  same  time. Ultimately, however, taking part in the IB Diploma Programme helps our students exhaust their full potential if they rise to the challenge.

Both the IB Diploma Programme and the German sixth form start in year 11. Some of the standard German Abitur courses chosen by the students in grade 10 will be held in English for students participating in the IB Diploma Programme. In order to cover aspects of the course syllabi of certain IB Diploma subjects that do not correspond to their German counterparts a limited number of extra lessons are introduced. For the IB Diploma, there are Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) courses and students choose three each. In addition to the normal courses there are some obligatory IB Core requirements: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Action and Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay (EE). TOK has been set up as an English-language course to be part of the German Abitur and is open to any sixth form student, including those not enrolled in the IB Diploma Programme. CAS covers some of the extracurricular parts of the IB and the EE is a scientific paper of about 4,000 words which students research and write in the first year of the Diploma Programme.

Due to many overlaps in the syllabi of the IB Diploma Courses and the Saxonian Abitur courses the amount of extra work students must commit themselves to remains manageable.

Sankt Afra attempts to offer a wide selection of courses for the IB Diploma Programme. They are listed in the table below. At the end of the Diploma Programme students prove their academic progress by sitting two to three examinations in each subject; these are then marked by external examiners all over the world. The IB Programme at our school is financed almost exclusively by the Free State of Saxony and only examination fees have to be paid by the students.
